Black brass handles are mainly finished with two mainstream processes: antique chemical blackening for retro styles and black nickel electroplating / PVD vacuum black coating for modern styles. The base materials are formed through three standard methods: brass hot forging, lost-wax casting and CNC machining. The whole production adopts standardized procedures to ensure stable texture and quality of finished products.
The first step is blank forming. Simple straight handles are integrally processed from high-quality brass bars via CNC turning and milling. Special-shaped handles with complex contours are produced by lost-wax casting, including mould making, sand coating, pouring and shell removal. High-end solid handles adopt high-temperature hot forging to enhance structural strength and material density. All blanks are trimmed, deburred and coarsely polished to eliminate tool marks and sand holes for a smooth base surface.
The second step is pre-treatment, a core procedure determining the yield rate of surface finishing. Workpieces are first degreased with alkaline agents to completely remove residual cutting oil and polishing wax, then rinsed repeatedly with running water. Weak acid activation is applied to strip surface oxide and expose the pure brass substrate. According to design requirements, surface treatments such as wire drawing, brushing or matte sandblasting are conducted. Finally, workpieces are cleaned with pure water and dried to avoid uneven coloring and coating peeling.
The third step is black surface finishing. For retro-style handles, chemical blackening is adopted. Workpieces are soaked in professional blackening solution to form a uniform black oxide film. After rinsing, edges and corners can be manually polished to create a classic antique effect with dark recesses and bright raised edges. Dried workpieces are coated with transparent varnish for curing and protection. For modern minimalist handles, electroplating or PVD coating is used. A nickel base layer is plated to flatten the substrate, followed by dense black coating deposition. Passivation treatment endows the surface with excellent wear resistance, sweat resistance and color fastness.
The final stage includes finish machining, cleaning impurities from mounting and screw holes, and assembling supporting accessories. Finished products undergo strict inspections covering color difference, wear resistance, assembly compatibility and salt spray tests. Qualified products are packaged and warehoused.
