Many home decoration owners have discovered that the matte brass pull handles develop black spots after some use, and they mistakenly think that the hardware is broken.
In fact, these black spots are caused by uneven oxidation due to sweat and moisture, which is a normal phenomenon of bare brass. There is no need to panic. The home materials can be gently cleaned.
Important Precaution
This applies only to solid brass without electroplating or lacquer coating.
If the brass is surface-coated with paint or electroplated, the black spots indicate a damaged coating. Even after cleaning, it will still re-blacken repeatedly.
Steel wool, hard sponges, toilet cleaner, and 84 disinfectant should all be strictly prohibited throughout the process. They are highly likely to scratch the brushed texture and corrode the metal.
Method 1 | Mild spots (first choice, most gentle) Baking soda paste
Materials: Baking soda + a small amount of warm water, pure cotton cloth
1.Mix baking soda with water to form a non-flowing paste.
2.Dip a soft cloth in the paste and gently wipe in circular motions over the black spot area.
3.After the pigmentation has faded, use a damp cloth to wipe away all the remaining powder.
4.Finally, use a dry cloth to thoroughly dry it, and make sure there is no water accumulation in the crevices.
Method 2 | Moderate Dark Spots: Lemon + Fine Salt
Materials: Fresh lemons, fine salt, soft cloth
1.Slice the lemon and sprinkle a layer of fine salt on the surface.
2.Gently wipe away the dark spots. Citric acid dissolves the oxidized spots;
Key point: Do not stay for a long time! After cleaning, rinse with clean water immediately and dry with a dry cloth.
If acidic substances remain for a long time, they will actually cause new oxidized spots to form.
Method 3 | Stubborn black spots - Brass maintenance wax / metal polishing paste
Purchase the special polishing wax for brass online. Apply a small amount onto a soft cloth and gently polish the black spots in a local area.
After removing the spots, wipe the excess wax evenly. Apply a thin layer of maintenance wax as well. This can prevent moisture from penetrating and delay the recurrence of the spots.
Two life choices. After reading, there's no more hesitation.
1.Pursue a fresh, uniform warm golden color: Regularly remove black spots, and apply a thin coat of maintenance wax every 2-3 months during humid seasons.
2.Prefer the texture of the bygone era: Minor black spots do not need to be forcibly polished. With long-term normal use, the overall brass will continue to oxidize, and the local spots will gradually blend together, forming a seamless and natural patina with rich charm.
Daily prevention to reduce the recurrence of dark spots
1.When your hands are sweaty, try to avoid touching the brass pull handles directly.
2.Every week, use a dry cloth to wipe off sweat and fingerprints from the surface of the handle.
3.For the humid areas in the south and coastal houses, conduct regular wax sealing maintenance.
4.When cleaning, make sure to prevent disinfectant and cleaning agents from splashing onto the brass hardware.
